The Benefits of Yoga
Whether this is your first or hundredth yoga class, it is important to remember why we step on the mat.
Stress relief - let's be honest, modern life is stressful and this ancient practice can really help to overcome some of that. The combination of physical movement and breathing techniques, along with meditation can really soothe the soul!
Strength and flexility - it has to be the biggest myth that you need to be flexible to practice yoga. The truth is that yoga can help to increase flexibility. The aim of the asana (postures) is to prepare the body for long periods of stillness in meditation.
Community - if you'd like to chat to your fellow yoga buddies it really can act as a great way to meet new people and connect.
Preparing for Your First Class
What to Bring
Yoga Mat: This is the one piece of equipment I would recommend having for your at-home class. It can help to support the knees and avoid slipping. It also creates a lovely sense of personal space that you role out, step on the mat and let every-day stresses fade!
Comfortable Clothing: It really doesn't matter what this looks like and everyone has different preferences. For the at home yoga class, you could even wear your pjs.
Cushion and blanket: While optional, for the at home yoga class this can be a really nice enhancement to your experience as it will make certain poses more comfortable and your savsana (final relaxation) more, well, relaxing!
What to Expect
Class Duration: 60 minutes. Usually, about ten minutes of gentle 'warm up', flowing for about forty minutes and then ten minutes of savsana.
Lots of options: Whether you're practising with me in person or online, there'll be different variations throughout so that you can pick whichever feels right for you.
Moments of peace: Though I love a good natter, I try to include plenty of moments of pause and quiet throughout so that you can focus inwards.
Moments of laughter: I pride myself on yoga that doesn't take itself too seriously. This means the odd dodgy joke, no judgement if you wobble and honesty from me if I'm teaching something and thinking wow I'm wobbling today!
Whatever you are hoping to get from your practice, you are so welcome at Chill Seeker Yoga and I hope to see you on the mat - online or in person - very soon!
